Fabricators and manufacturers have many choices to make as to how and what to spend their money on when reinvesting in their operation. Depending on what kind of work the shop does ultimately determines the type of equipment that will be purchased. For a developing operation a hydraulic ironworker often will have the largest ROI compared to other equipment.

How high can this ROI be? As high as 60 to 90 percent a year. When bidding on jobs that require the use of an hydraulic ironworker, the rate is typically 25 to 50 cents per cycle of machine. This figure is subject to the volume of the job; for example, if a customer wants standard “L” brackets manufactured out of ¼ inch thick by 4 inch wide steel plate, with four holes punched in it, two and each end. The standard rate for this would be figured as follows: Shearing the plate from 20 foot length = two shears = 1.00 Dollar. Punching four holes = 2.00 dollars. One bend = 50 cents, so the total for all operations equals $3.50. Again this total is subject to a shop minimum order and the cost of material would also have to be figured into this. This a very simple example of how most fabricators and manufacturers bid on and determine the price for certain jobs.

The highest ROI can be achieved when the hydraulic ironworker can be purchased for a particular job or if the shop owner can secure a contract requiring special tooling specific to the job. An example of this would be stamping out 3 inch square base plates with multiple holes. This type of operation could be accomplished with one cycle of the machine, provided the appropriate tooling was purchased. In this example, once the shop owner is set up, the operation will become extremely profitable as the volume of parts produced increases.

Moreover, the Hydraulic Ironworker typically has the highest return on investment for most fabricators and manufacturers when compared to other equipment. Are they any Good?

In todays global manufacturing economy quality sometimes takes a backseat. Traditional "knick-knacks", toys and even heavy industrial equipment is being manufactured in China and other Asian countries. The goal of this post is to warn fabricators and shop owners about hydraulic ironworkers produced outside of the U.S.A.. Currently there are several brands of hydraulic ironworkers being sold in the U.S. that lead consumers to believe they are manufactured in Germany or elsewhere.

When comparing hydraulic ironworkers, it is prudent to ask the supplier where the ironworker is manufactured and what kind of warranty, if any, is offered. Often ironworkers are sold with a one or two year warranty honored by the manufacturer. If this is the case with an import machine you may have difficulty finding parts and product support. Ironworker LLC recommends buying an American made ironworker or one manufactured in Europe. If you are currently shopping for an ironworker you may want to check out this website, www.alibaba.com . On this site you will see many China made ironworkers that you may recognize from literature you may have received from a local dealer.

When shopping for a hydraulic ironworker it is important to be in the know. The more information that can be collected to make an informed decision the better. In short, do not be fooled. Do your research and think long term when investing in your shop. A hydraulic ironworker is not made out of plastic. Steel quality, weld integrity and mechanical stability are important. It is important to know the type of material and the thickness of material you will be pressing or punching. For example, to punch a 1-1/16” hole through 5/8” mild steel plate will take approximately 53 Tons. For a first time user it is important to note that no ironworker will be able to punch holes through material thicker than the width of the punch. For example, an extreme case of this would be an operator trying to punch ¼” holes in 1” thick plate. This would not work because even though the punch is harder than the plate, the plate still has more integrity than the punch. Holes can only be punched the same size as the material to be punched or larger. To select the right ironworker for your application, determine the maximum plate thickness and hole size to be punched. Using a slide chart provided by any Ironworker dealer, determine the tons required. It is recommended to add 15 to 20 percent more capacity to the tons required so as not to stress the machine. It is also important to note that you may have to double the tons required if punching through harder material such as carbon steel or stainless steel.

FOOTPRINT : When choosing an ironworker it is important to consider the footprint or floor area that the machine will take up, and at what end the punch will be located. ironworkers can process material infinite in length, so the room that is allowed in the front and rear of the machine depends on the application and the length of material to be worked on.

OPERATIONS: Almost every ironworker manufacturer builds a shear into the center of the ironworker. The major differences in ironworkers are the number of stations and where they are located. Some models have as little as 2 stations and others have as many as 5 or 6. Determining the correct model for your shop can be a challenging task. Most of the machines on the market today have open cavities where almost any tooling can be bolted into place and aligned in a matter of minutes. Few ironworkers have built in rod and square bar shears. Some have built in copper notchers and most have angle shears. Whatever operation the ironworker may be used for, its important to choose a model that can adapt to future needs.

You can always find out more information on our web-site...

www.ironworkerllc.com
